Founded in 1904 in the city of Gelsenkirchen, Schalke won seven German championships between 1934 and 1958. After enduring hard times and several relegations in the 80s and early 90s, the team has returned to form, winning the UEFA Cup in 1997. In the 2000-2001 season Schalke won its third German Cup (DFB-Pokal) and finished a close second in the Bundesliga.
