Born Teena Brandon of Lincoln, Nebraska, USA, Teena Brandon started living full-time as a man his late teens, in preparation for a sex-change operation. Brandon died on New Year's Eve 1993, at the age of 21 from being shot and stabbed by a 'friend'. A documentary and the film Boys Don't Cry have been made since then to tell his story.
