Heraclitus of Ephesus (or Ephesos), circa 540 BC - circa 480 BC. Obscure, aphoristic thinker who has had an abiding influence on both classical and modern thought. Best known for his doctrine of unceasing change. His writings are extant only in secondhand form, as quoted by other classical writers. 1.
