Chondromalacia (otherwise known as chondromalacia patellae, anterior knee pain syndrome, patellofemoral disorder or "runner's knee") is caused by improper tracking of the kneecap over the femur. As a result, the cartilage under the kneecap becomes roughened and pain results when the knee is bent or straightened while bearing weight.
